Boat Building Academy principal Yvonne Green has sent a series of photos from the student launch day down in Lyme back in June, which I will be publishing over the next few days.

Today’s photos are of a 13ft electric motor launch designed by Andrew Wolstenholme and built by student Phil Evans with help from other students, especially ‘Blues Brothers’, Will Howard and Mike Brenton. We aren’t told how they acquired their soubriquet on the course – perhaps someone will oblige using the comment link below this post – but congratulations to them all.

The launch is built with three layers of veneer: the outer layers are sapele, with an inner layer of Douglas fir.

Preliminary sketches for the sailing Ella skiff

Intheboatshed readers following the progress of the ‘girls’ series skiffs might be interested in this initial drawing for the sailing version of the 12ft Ella skiff.

I’ve drawn quite a large sail area of 72sqft, which will make it a lively boat despite its simple hard-chine hull, and just what my daughter would love – I told here I’d try to create a boat that would keep up with a Topper, which is her current favourite small boat. The Ella skiff will also have buckets-full of built-in bouyancy.

In addition, Dan Savage kindly sent me the shots below of two card models he’s made of of the rowing version of the Ella skiff. Thanks Dan!

Ierne on the BBC

Ierne on the water – image from the Classic Sailing Club weblog

There was a big treat for Fife yacht fans on TV on Sunday evening – recent film footage of the fabulous Ierne flying along the Humber Estuary.

If you missed it and are in the UK you will be able to catch it on the BBC iPlayer for the next few days.

It turned up on the Griff Rhys Jones series Rivers,  in which our hero visits various interesting and often beautiful locations and attempts something dangerous, cold and painful, such as wild swimming in the Tay, swimming across the Mersey or canyoning down Scottish mountain streams. I can live without all the nonsense in this series, but the photography is superb and the the Ierne moment at the end of the second episode is the best thing so far. Get on to the iPlayer now and make sure you don’t miss it, I say!
