Songs about rivers with Reginald Foort at the mighty cinema organ

[ad name=”intheboatshed-post”]

The Eton Boating Song sung by the Eton College Choral Society,  the Song of the Volga Boatmen with the Don Cossack Choir, Old Father Thames sung by Harry Compton and Ya Vass Lublu sung by Paula Grey. Marvellous nostalgic stuff, every bit of it, and it comes with some nice old footage of the Thames and its working boats, including people apparently playing and sunbathing on its beaches.

Ben Crawshaw finds rowing a little tiring

[ad name=”intheboatshed-post”]

Those of you with a cruel streak will laugh this video of Ben Crawshaw’s, while others, like me, will squirm uncomfortably in sympathy at his predicament out at sea with no wind.

He has rowed some surprisingly big distances in his little Onawind Blue. Read all about Ben’s trip from mainland spain to Ibiza and the Columbrete Islands at his weblog The Invisible Workshop.

One thing this film does show is that while rowing is a good thing in principle, it is possible to have too much of it!

Carriacou sloops on Youtube

[ad name=”intheboatshed-post”]

Reader Larry Henry got in touch the other day to alert me to this video on YouTube promoting photographer Alexis Andrews’ two books (volumes I and II) celebrating the Carriacou sloops of Dominica. By January I expect to watch this daily, just wishing I could be anywhere that’s warm and bathed in the colours of summer!

One word of warning though – when I do watch it next it will be with the sound turned down. There are lots of videos on YouTube of the locals playing local music that I have to say is much more to my taste.
