J Class yachts racing at Falmouth – photos by Marcus Lewis

Fowey boatbuilder Marcus Lewis wrote to say that he just had to send in these stunning photos of J Class yachts racing at Falmouth – and I’m very grateful he did.

They have a great feel of photos taken in the early part of the last century – it’s partly the J Class boats themselves, but it’s also something about the colour range.

Marcus took them on Thursday last week. He said Valsheda, Ranger, Rainbow and Lionheart were all charging along in a F3-4, and did three laps of a windward-leeward course with a charging reach to finish off Pendennis Castle.

Many thanks Marcus! There’s more information about the Falmouth regatta here.

Marcus runs a boat building and repair and restoration boat yard working on some lovely traditional craft, many of them local types, at Fowey in Cornwall. See his website here and click here for earlier posts at intheboatshed.net.

Regular reader, commenter and contributor Paul Mullings has kindly sent over these photographs of the Mahurangi Classic Yacht Regatta ‘to bring some joy to you wintery world’. Mahurangi’s near Auckland, New Zealand.

Thanks for the lovely shots Paul!

PS – Reader Andrew White has alerted me to a sad accident associated with the regatta in which the Arch Logan designed Gypsy collided with another boat and sank quickly, injuring one of the two crew on board.

TV film about schooner sailing and racing on the coast of Nova Scotia

Schooner sailing and racing on the Nova Scotia coast

Here’s another nice film, this time about schooners, schooner racing and the people who build, maintain and race these fabulous working boats along the coast of Nova Scotia.

It’s a touch schmaltzy for British tastes, but takes me straight back to the times when I dreamed of working on these boats as a young teenager. By that time, of course, the days of working schooners were already long gone but no-one had told me, or if they did I wasn’t listening…

Thanks to Mike Goodwin for letting me know about this one.
