The designer grins as the first Julie skiff is built and launched in Florida

Bill Gay’s Julie skiff

I’m really chuffed today because the great news this morning is that Bill Gay has built and launched the first Julie skiff. From what I can see she still needs some work, including knees at the stern (they’ll add a lot of strength) and the breasthook (which will add some strength and provide a place to attach the essential painter), painting and some drain plugs for the boxed-in areas, but she’s looking good and will look even better (and go faster and further) with the batteries in the middle of the boat.

‘After three weekends of hard work the Julie Skiff saw the flats of the Intercoastal of Fl today. What a great boat. It will be great to fish, clam and camp out of for years to come.’

Models of the Ella 12ft skiff

I’m delighted to report that kind Dave Coulter has been the first to report that he has made a model of the Ella skiff, and has agreed to let me share his photo with intheboatshed.net readers.

Dave’s photo rather got me going and in a stolen moment between getting the house ready for a dinner party and our guests arriving, I managed to make one up also: I’ve posted thumbnails of mine below. Hopefully readers will be encouraged to make their own, and perhaps to comment. I’d guess that making up a model like this would be a nice activity to do with kids too, by the way.

Joe Blathwayt builds a glued clinker dinghy at the Boat Building Academy

Boat Building Academy principal Yvonne Green has sent us a final set of photos from the student launch day down in Lyme back in December, this time showing a 12ft glued clinker stem dinghy built by Joe Blathwayt.

Joe, a former architect, has moved to Lyme and wanted a fun beach and sea angling boat with an outboard, and so he built his dinghy on a course at the Academy.  The lines were taken from a 40-year old 10’ stem dinghy, and then adapted for the new purpose.

Now he’s based at Lyme, I gather Joe plans to combine working on boats and undertaking architectural projects.

Yvonne comments: ‘We started a new 38-week course today. It’s always interesting to see the different mix of people who come to us.

‘We showed them photos of the launch and the boats and told them that’s where they would be 38 weeks from now. The news was greeted with some disbelief… ‘
