Marcus Lewis’s boats take the lead in racing at Cornish regattas

Fowey boatbuilder Marcus Lewis has sent me this photo from Cornwall to mark a series of outstanding successes in local regattas.

After a week at Fowey Regatta in which she won three out of seven races ande claimed the Overall Cup for Fowey River dinghies, Four Brothers also raced to victory in the Polruan Regatta, in which she snapped up the Silver Cup.

In one race during Fowey Regatta No 54 was challenged by Marcus and Johnny Nance in No 53 Kingfisher but Four Brothers leapt into the lead on the last lap and took the winners gun.

Marcus is currently restoring a Mevagissey Tosher built by Percy Mitchell, and I understand the refurbished boat will be for sale.

Alec Jordan’s beautiful model of Iain Oughtred’s new Scottish rowing skiff

Jordan Boats proprieter Alec Jordan has built this model of Iain Oughtred’s St Ayles skiff, the boat at the heart of a project to bring competitive coastal rowing back to Scotland.

Jordan Boats is to supply cut-out ply kits for the project and like a good boatbuilder, Alec’s first step has been to make a model. Here’s what he says about it:

‘Hi Gavin

‘Attached are some pictures of the skiff model.

‘With the model having gone together successfully, I have now started on the
construction of the real thing in the past couple of days – I’m doing the donkey
work of laminating stems and frames at the moment. I will hopefully have
the moulds up on Saturday and start the planking next week.

‘The boat, I think, is absolutely sublime – I just hope that it rows as well
as it looks!

The Beale Park Boat Show, the annual Amateur Boatbuilding Competition and the true story of the near death and new life of the Cornish Crabbers company all feature in the September/October issue of Water Craft.

I should remind readers that The Most Innovative Home-Made Boat went to Chris Waite’s Octavia, an elegant and efficient stitch and glue rowing skiff that we’ve featured several times at intheboatshed.net – no doubt the Water Craft article will reveal much more.

From France there are photos of La Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan from Kathy Mansfield and Tony Langmead, and in the dark depths of his boat shed Dick Philips makes more progress on his strip-planked Nigel Irens-designed Roxane.

There’s an extra reason for taking out a sub now, by the way – for in October the magazine’s subscription prices go up!
