Percy Blandford, DIY polymath and small boat designer, crosses the bar

Percy Blandford

I have heard that Percy Blandford, the century-old legendary designer of boats and canoes for home building and prolific author on huge range of workshop-related topics passed away today.

Good ol’ Mr Blandford. Among many other things he helped to get the post-War leisure boating and DIY boat building boom going, and got lots of people afloat for the first time. He will be much missed, but deserves a rousing cheer to send him off. I’m raising my glass, as you’d expect.

Our post about him written to celebrate his 100th birthday probably tells the story as well as I can – read it here.

International 12 Foot Dinghy plans drawings online

International 12 foot dinghy

Intheboatshed.net reader Erwin van Doeselaar has found a set of plans for the International 12 clinker built racing dinghy online.

They can be found at the Fries Scheepvaart Museum website and can be seen here.

I gather these are considered out of date and that a racing boat could not be built from them, though I’m not clear whether this is because they would not conform to class rules or whether a boat built from them might be too slow to win. However, I must say I find these little boats designed to be fast and fun very appealing – check out that transverse section.

But I’d hate to tip one over!

Two links to check out are 100 years of 12′ dinghy sailing and The International 12 Foot Dinghy Association.

Thanks Erwin!

Mingary in the water following a hull rebuild

Mingaray

The 1929 Alfred Mylne designed yacht Mingary has been relaunched following what Will Stirling of Stirling and Son describes as a very efficient and organised hull rebuild by her owner Christian Scheitdmann.

Will took part in the work, which was was carried out in a farm building in North Germany, with back up the Moderstiski Traditional Shipyard in Maasholm which has been in the same family for over 150 years.

The photos are gorgeous, but be warned – take care what you do with them as the contact page includes a few threats. And you might want to turn the volume down on your computer…

There are three YouTubes about this project on an earlier Intheboatshed.net post.

My thanks to Will for letting me know about this one!
