Tad Roberts has made plans for his Exploration Ketch available for free

British Columbia designer Tad Roberts has made the plans for his 23ft 9in Exploration Ketch available for free from his website. The plans themselves are on this page.

It’s a very nice looking boat, and the people in the photos seem to be having the time of their lives in some enviable summer weather (we’re deep in winter here in England just now).

There’s a lot one could do with a boat like this, but with all that string to play with I think it would be particularly good for sailing schools and for family outings. My tha nks to Duckworks Magazine for the lead.

Christmas 12th Night celebrations on the River Thames with the Lion’s Part

We travelled to the South Bank of the River Thames in London today to see the Holly Man land from a Thames waterman’s cutter and the doughty Lion’s Part perform their carols and Mumming Play. I didn’t get the name of the boat type correct to begin with – so thanks to Chris Partridge for his comment below.

I brought along my fiddle to lend a hand with the music, but by golly it was cold for a fiddler’s fingers. Julie meanwhile took these photos despite the considerable crowd.

The play was as topical and amusing as one could wish, and The Lion’s Part’s troupe of professional actors includes some very sharp performers. I was particularly impressed with their Doctor – the Doctor in these plays always has the best part, but this particular one seemed to have been born to play it.

A favourite family winter outing in for us Atkins and Arnotts is a walk along the River Medway, which is at its most attractive between Maidstone and Tonbridge.

There weren’t too many boats worth photographing on the river this week – it is midwinter, after all – but we had only arrived on its banks a few moments when we resolved to spend some time rowing on it in the dory this summer.
