Lovely barge photo wins photo competition

This lovely photo Regatta Day – Mersea Island by Chrissie Westgate featuring sailing barge Kitty was among the three winners of a recent photo competition run by Essex County Council.

Professionals and amateurs were asked to submit photographs portraying Essex culture, and some 97 photographers submitted a total of 131 images, and the 15 finalists.

See the finalists here and the announcement of the winners here. Many of the shots focus on the industries, events, scenery and history of the coast of Essex , and I’ve posted a few more below.

My thanks to The Barge Blog for alerting the world outside Essex!

Ships and the Essex Coast – photos my father took in 1955-7

I love the atmospheric shots of Leigh Creek and Maldon. And talking of atmospheric, look at those ships at Tilbury – they were coal fired in those days and don’t you know it!

The young female figure is my Mum, but I guess you will have worked that out.
