Adam Newton completes and sells his elegant little rower

Adam Newton of the Boatyard at Beer tells me that elegant new rowing boat he’s been working on is now complete and has been sold to a happy customer from Plymouth.

I gather the new owner plans to take her to the Beale Park Boat Show next year to demonstrate some adjustable rowlocks he’s designing. Now that sounds interesting…

Flamborough in 1957

Flamborough fisherman's sword dance

This short film of the people of Flamborough in 1957 is a wonderful period piece – it includes:

  • local lads dancing the traditional Flamborough fishermen’s sword dance
  • the Flamborough Head lighthouse keepers
  • flag-sellers raising money for the RNLI
  • a demonstration rescue by the open lifeboat and a helicopter
  • fishermen working with the local boats, known as cobles

Photographer Ellen Tynan in Egypt

Photographer Ellen Tynan has some impressive sets of photographs on Flickr – the photos in this collection set one thinking about the boats and people they depict, and are also a powerful reminder that there’s more to present-day Egypt than tourism and dreadful political troubles.

Here she is photographing currachs and hookers on the coast of Ireland, and here capturing the fishermen of Huanchaco, Peru, working from reed canoes.

My thanks to Tim Shaw of the weblog ChineBlog for leading me to her work.
