Chapter XXIII: ‘Make a small bight, then pass the end through the same, then round the standing part from above and finally back through the bight from below. There is a quicker way of making a bowline than this, but it is a knack which can only be learnt from demonstration.’

The world has some very kind people in it, thankfully, and one of them is Chris Perkins, builder of the Iain Oughtred canoe featured by intheboatshed.net a few days ago.

The story goes like this. I accidentally lost almost all of the 480 photos I took at the recent Beale Park Boat Show after a backup failed to work properly, and so I appealed for some replacements – and Macgregor canoe builder Chris Perkins was kind enough to supply me with some of his. Naturally, I’m hugely grateful. Thanks Chris.

I recently found this lovely engraving of a Humber keel in a very old book, and I’ve made the downloadable file extra-large to try to make sure it will print out nicely. Perhaps some of you will find a suitable spot for it.
