I think the melodeon is an example of the Hohner Liliput Preciosa, by the way, a compact and rather quiet single-reeded model. I wonder where the girl is today?

Something similar called a Liliput was I gather very popular with German servicemen during WWII because of its small size. I bet you all wanted to know that…

PS – A long-lost old friend has unexpectedly got in touch after three decades to say that this is not a melodeon, but a tiny piano accordion. She should know – she’s currently setting up an accordion museum in Inverness. Thanks Caroline Hunt! But I think I could be forgiven for being mistaken on this question – I think I see eight buttons on the left hand, which is at least suggestive of a melodeon, but the air holes on the side do look a lot like accordion bass buttons.

PPS – I like to take my one-row melodeon when cruising in our little 20-footer; it’s a great thing to have around when waiting for the tide. Does anyone else do this?

An Islay skiff, a stripper canoe and a model Folkboat – three more summer BBA launches

The final three boats launched by Boat Building Academy students this year are a 16ft 5in Selway Fisher-designed Islay skiff built by Martin McMahon, a 14ft 3in Canadian canoe built by James Downs, and a 1m remote controlled model Nordic Folkboat made by Tim Price.

After 40 years of sales and marketing, the lure of boat building training could wait no longer for Martin, who is an experienced sailor. Like a number of other BBA students in the past, he chose to build a Selway-Fisher design, and this time it was the strip planked Islay skiff in red cedar.

James joined the Academy straight from college where he studied carpentry
and joinery.

Originally from South Africa, Tim came to the BBA via Alderney in the Channel Islands. He built his 1m remote control model of a Nordic Folkboat in his spare time.

The next Boat Building Academy student launch will be 9.30am on Thursday the 9th December. Up to five boats will be launched from the class of march 2010.

The builds include a replica of the traditional clinker-built Dorset crab and lobster boat Witch of Worbarrow (see more of this project here), a 13 ft 6 in cold-moulded electric motor launch, a 14ft Whitehall skiff, a 15ft Chestnut canoe and an 18ft strip-planked, gaff-rigged daysailer.

Alan Stancombe makes a nice job of his Cinderella open canoe Marie Rose

Alan Stancombe’s Cinderella

Congratulations to Alan Stancombe on completing his good looking open canoe Marie Rose, built to my Cinderella design. I particularly like the small bouyancy boxes, and the carrying handle/beam strap/whatever it’s called.

Here’s what he has to say about it:

‘Hi Gavin:

‘I thought you might like to see the end product. You can see that I fitted the buoyancy tanks, which look quite nice. My only real problem was with the fillets. I taped them while the epoxy was too soft and consequently they are very lumpy. Also where I dot and dabbed between ties they were too big. Because there was no rebate and the joints were just butt joints I did not want to sand them down too much. Next time I will let them set before adding tape. The problem with this is that you get air bubbles in the joins.

‘Anyway it doesn’t look too bad for a first go built not from a kit. My varnishing skills are improving; I compromised on the paint/varnish and used International Interdeck inside as a non-slip medium.
