A skiff on a lonely New Zealand beach

Regular intheboatshed.net reader Paul Mullings found this skiff on a beach while strolling by the Manukau Harbour, Auckland, New Zealand and was so uplifted by its simple elegance that he decided to send in a clutch of photos.

So here’s the question: assuming that it was built to published drawings, which were the plans this builder used? Answers to the Comment link below please!

A clever rotating model of the Julie skiff

Intheboatshed.net reader David Booth has provided me with some entertainment today with a rotating photo of a model of the Julie skiff he has made. Click on the image above, click on the image that pops up and you’ll see what I mean.

David’s seriously considering building the full sized boat, made the model as a step along the way, and then realised that it was a good subject for so clever software he has developed – Rotafota. Click here for another more refined sample showing what it can do and here for the product website.

Sadie’s 14ft Gardner dory project Dolly

Boat Building Academy student Sadie Snowdown built this 14ft Marblehead dory skiff designed by John Gardner, and launched it along with her fellow students’ projects back in June.

It’s a double-chine plywood rowing skiff with oak details that she has set up for two rowers with modern gates and pins rather than the more usual traditional rowlocks.

Sadie joined the course at Lyme after working at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as a volunteer, during which she decided she wanted to develop her boat building skills. See the Portsmouth Dockyard website for information about the work volunteers undertake.

John Gardner’s books are a tremendous body of work if you’re interested in American boat types, and some of them have been available at very keen prices in recent years it’s well worth checking Amazon.
