Nested panels for the sailing Ella skiff

Readers interested in the sailing version of the Ella skiff may be entertained by this glimpse of how I’ve nesting all the various panels for the half-decked sailing version onto six sheets of ply.

I’ve placed the bottom, daggerboard and rudder components together because it seems to me natural that they should be made from the same 3/8in ply; the other panels I think should be in 1/4in.

Free plans are on their way. The next job is to plot all those coordinates for cutting out…

I’ve been frantically working on the sailing version of the 12ft Ella skiff today – having broken my left ankle a couple of weeks ago, drawing this little boat has been a huge relief from the tedium of spending each day on the sofa. Of course it’s no consolation for losing much of the summer sailing season, but I hope I’m making the best of it!

Anyway, I thought I’d share today’s progress. As I think I’ve said before, this will be a lively little boat but I hope folks out there will find it appealing. The next  jobs, are to nest the panels and draw up the sail.

If you’re interested in this little boat, please email me at gmatkin@gmail.com or use the comment link below.

Preliminary sketches for the sailing Ella skiff

Intheboatshed readers following the progress of the ‘girls’ series skiffs might be interested in this initial drawing for the sailing version of the 12ft Ella skiff.

I’ve drawn quite a large sail area of 72sqft, which will make it a lively boat despite its simple hard-chine hull, and just what my daughter would love – I told here I’d try to create a boat that would keep up with a Topper, which is her current favourite small boat. The Ella skiff will also have buckets-full of built-in bouyancy.

In addition, Dan Savage kindly sent me the shots below of two card models he’s made of of the rowing version of the Ella skiff. Thanks Dan!
