Strip built Peterborough canoe built by Alexander Threipland and Russell Gale at the Boatbuilding Academy, Lyme

Boat Building Academy students Alexander Threipland and Russell Gale built this strip built 16ft Peterborough canoe, and launched it along with their fellow students’ projects back in June.

Alexander and Russell built their canoe in glass-sheathed western red cedar, with wicker seats, a cherry thwart and fore and aft decks with ebony detail. Since leaving the course Alexander has started a business, Wilton Woodworks, with Will Reed, a former student and instructor whose boat was first launched at the Beale Park Thames Boat Show this year. Hopefully we’ll hear more from them in the near future.

Boat Building Academy student Sadie Snowdown built this 14ft Marblehead dory skiff designed by John Gardner, and launched it along with her fellow students’ projects back in June.

It’s a double-chine plywood rowing skiff with oak details that she has set up for two rowers with modern gates and pins rather than the more usual traditional rowlocks.

Sadie joined the course at Lyme after working at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as a volunteer, during which she decided she wanted to develop her boat building skills. See the Portsmouth Dockyard website for information about the work volunteers undertake.

John Gardner’s books are a tremendous body of work if you’re interested in American boat types, and some of them have been available at very keen prices in recent years it’s well worth checking Amazon.

Boat Building Academy principal Yvonne Green has sent a series of photos from the student launch day down in Lyme back in June, which I will be publishing over the next few days.

Today’s photos are of a 13ft electric motor launch designed by Andrew Wolstenholme and built by student Phil Evans with help from other students, especially ‘Blues Brothers’, Will Howard and Mike Brenton. We aren’t told how they acquired their soubriquet on the course – perhaps someone will oblige using the comment link below this post – but congratulations to them all.

The launch is built with three layers of veneer: the outer layers are sapele, with an inner layer of Douglas fir.
