Johnson & Jago-built 2 1/2 tonner Dzorbha

Marinestore at Maldon sent an email to me (and probably many others) appealing for someone to take on this 1936 Johnson & Jago-built 2 1/2 tonner.

More details and photos can be found at the Marinestore weblog, but the basic information is as follows:

Dzorbha has been abandoned by her owner. Her planking and ribs are pitch pine on oak in good condition. She has no sails and her mast is long past its sell by date. Overall, she will need a lot of work by a true enthusiast. She can be viewed at Shipways Yard, North St, Maldon CM9 5HQ, in the back row against the fence.

Marinestore says it will accept any reasonable offer (the owner she goes to is more important than what we get). There will be a lifting charge to load her on to transport if required and we will allow a week for the new owner to get things organised. I’ve emailed to ask for more photos and some history, but haven’t had a reply – but maybe you’ll be more lucky!

Harrison Butler 3-tonner Wee Bess

Wee Bess is a 1932, 3-ton auxiliary sailing yacht built by R J Prior & Sons of Burnham-On-Crouch to Harrison-Bulter’s 1911 Memory design. She’s up for sale on eBay and really needs someone to care for her. Thank you to John Hesp for spotting her!

She’s 21ft 6in by 6ft 2in beam by 4ft 6in draft, and I think she’s cute beyond words. Construction is copper fastened 1in pitch-pine planking on oak frames, with all-teak upperworks and cockpit, and a laid pine deck. She has a lead keel and internal lead trimming ballast, and forged iron floors and knees.

Thames double skiff for sale

I fouled up badly at the Beale Park Thames Boat Show: my mistake was to believe the weather forecast and went to the show on the day it rained most.

On the following day it was supposed to rain from dawn to dusk – but instead the sun shone – I’ve seen photos to prove it. Every sailor, gardener, farmer, camper and boat show organiser has had the same kind of experience, and all one can do is smile and make the best of it, which in my case meant taking a lot of photos of gently rain-spattered boats and people.

I’ll be putting a lot more shots from the show up over time, but I thought I’d surprise the folks who came to the show to sell this splendid 1902 Thames skiff by putting up some shots of their boat – and perhaps helping them to find a buyer.

I told them I’d do it, but like so many others they were sceptical. I think they imagined I needed to be paid – but I don’t and it’s not in my plan. Give me a good story or some pics or both and I’ll put them up, though if they’re not, I won’t. Even if this site someday becomes truly commercial, I doubt I’ll ever want to charge contributors money for providing information for a good post.
