The funeral of laboratory scientist, ship’s cook and most of all celebrated shanty singer Johnny Collins took place yesterday. He was a kind man, and a huge enthusiast right to the end. Here’s a clip of him singing some years ago – and I thought regular readers might like the photography too!
I remember Johnny Collins well from folk clubs in the 1970s to shanty sessions on the old Foudroyant in Portsmouth Harbour. What a great voice he had, and a greater personality. He will be sadly missed.
He will be missed greatly. He died of heart problems following some big gigs in Poland, where he was a big star, by the way.
