Webb Chiles, the man who did extraordinary things in a Drascombe Lugger

[ad name=”intheboatshed-post”]

Chiles is an extraordinary character who has often chosen to live life on the edge, including long trips by sea in a 18ft Drascombe lugger yawl.

There’s a lot to read in this unusual, slightly dreamy website, and some nice photos too.

Lulworth and Mariquita to race at Cowes Classic Week

[ad name=”intheboatshed-post”]

Grand dames of the sea Lulworth and Mariquita to slog it out in racing at Cowes Classic Week in July organised by the British Classic Yacht Club. I gather this will be the first time that Lulworth has raced in British waters since the 1920s.

There’s a handsome gallery of photos from this year’s event here, and results and reports can be found here. It all seems a world away from the muddy, low-budget East Coast sailing we know so well, but still it looks like a hell of a lot of fun!

Cold-moulded Laurent Giles Audacity for sale at Faversham

News Chronicle Audacity Salaam for sale

Audacity Salaam is for sale

Hollowshore Cruising Club commodore David Williams is selling Salaam, his cold-moulded Laurent Giles Audacity small sailing cruiser. See details here.

Originally sponsored as a class by the News Chronicle newspaper, the Audacity is one of the boats for which the famous Sopranino was a prototype.

No-one has mentioned the issue, but from looking at her figures I’m inclined to think she might be a bit of a goer, particularly to windward. Does anyone want to comment? If so please use the comment link below.

For a post about another similar Laurent Giles design, follow this link: http://intheboatshed.net/2006/12/26/jog-anyone/
