Winston Megoren, marine artist

Marine artist Winston Megoren FRSA was born in 1913 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, where he spent much of his youth watching and studying the shipping that passed on the Tyne and making many sketches.

After training as an accountant, at the age of 23 he chose marine art instead, and began illustrate cruising stories for Yachting Monthly. Later he was attached to Naval Intelligence at the at the Admiralty in the later part of the, illustrating official publications and ship recognition books.

After the war Megoren returned to working for book and periodical publishers including Rupert Hart-Davis for which he produced illustrations for the series The Mariner’s Library.

From 1948 he lived in Weymouth until his sudden death in 1971 at the age of fifty seven.
