A classic duel between Fife yachts

The Truant

Currently being restored by the Classic Sailing Club, the Fife-built classic 8-metre racing yachts Ierne and Truant will compete in the 8 Metre World Championships in July, and then in a re-enactment of the Jura Duel.

The Duel was a famous challenge between the same two yachts in 1919, in which they raced from Crinan to Jura for a case of Jura whisky and the satisfaction of being the fastest 8-metre in the world.

Although built to very similar lines, Ierne carried the new Marconi rig and excelled in light winds, while Truant had the old-style gaff rig and preferred the heavier airs. For those lucky enough to be there, this race will be quite a sight.

After the Duel is complete, a limited number of opportunites to sail on these yachts will be available to members of the Classic Cruising Club.

The weblog Ierne and Truant follows their renovation and return to racing in July at the 8 Metre World Championships.
