Dory-like flattie turf boat, found at Boulogne

We spotted this dory-like flattie in the castle moat at Boulogne, and guessed that it must be a traditional or historic type. Whatever it is, it’s interesting – it’s a kind of dory, but it has the look of a turf boat and in any case is an easy to build flattie, so long as wide planks are available.

I’m guessing the cut-off stern and transom are an adaptation for a small outboard.

Does anyone have more information?

  1. Very interesting boat! I hope someone gets lines and construction details. Could it be a type of pirogue? Might be an “Introduction to Lapstrake” project.

    1. Hi Tom – I’m delighted you saw what I saw! I’d guess it’s a known French traditional type but as I don’t know the literature describing French boats of this kind, I’m hoping someone will be able to enlighten us one day! Gavin
