Thanks for posting this glimpse of a world which existed before my time – George Thetford was my grandfather. The winch (not the wench) was apparently responsible for my father’s slightly crooked nose when he and another enthusiast had (so I was told) let go at the wrong moment and the handles took charge. This would have been in 1936 if his memory was correct!
