The entire fleet is lit up with fairy lamps…

Some folks weren’t so happy about the BBC’s coverage of the Diamond Jubilee Thames Pageant – I for one could have done with a lot more information about the boats.

But it was a marvellous piece of work compared with this legendary BBC radio commentary on the Spithead Royal Naval Review of 1937.

Presenter Lieutenant Commander Tommy Woodroffe sounds like he’s had one too many, and I’m pretty sure he was as ‘lit up’ as he kept saying the fleet were…

I’m told that shortly after the BBC introduced a policy that there should always be a BBC producer on hand to make sure nothing like it ever happened again.

Thanks to Brian Cathcart, founder of Hacked Off, for spotting this one.
