William, Marie and Josef Moffett are building the sailing version of the Ella skiff on what looks like the verandah of their home in Mauritius – see photographs here, here and here. To get the latest instalment, click on the ‘boat’ button for a menu of galleries.
I always have my fingers crossed when an early example of a boat is being built, but so far I’m very pleased – she’s turning out to be a sweet little thing, and everything seems to have fitted as it was meant to do!
Free plans for building the sailing version of the Ella skiff can be found here; plans for the rowing boat version are here. The Ella also has two larger sister ships: the Sunny skiff and the Julie skiff.
I suppose this is off topic.
Earlier this week, the NY Times crossword puzzle used the word "veranda." A day or so later, I asked my wife what the definition of a veranda is, meaning what distinguishes it from a porch or deck. She replied that she thought it was regional. Here in New England, we would say "porch."
So here it is in your post, but spelled differently: verandah. Wikipedia says the source is Bengali, which explains the trailing "h", and there's not indication that the two spellings represent a British/American cultural difference.
They offer "gallery" as an alternate synonym. From my perspective, I that feels more southern US than anything else.
And now, back to boats.

For us a porch relates to a door, while a veranda is somewhere to sit – so yes, I think you have the meanings correct.

What an amazing project. Wish I could of undertaken such a challenge when I was younger, would of given me a deeper appreciation of sailing which has taken me years to hone.
