I doubt many people who visit Mumbai take time out of their business or holiday schedule to photograph boats, but my brother Matt Atkin did so, and the results he came back with more than justify taking his beloved Leica down to the waterfront.
Quite a few of these shots would look well on an artist’s easel. Many thanks Matt! I’ll put some more of these photos up in the next few days.
There are many things to find in these shots but I’m struck by the craft, many of which have the tubby quality that’s typical of many beach boats including those of the UK.
For more of Matt’s photos, click here (Vietnam), here (Vietnam), here (Thailand), here (Hong Kong), here (Hong Kong), here (Hong Kong), here (New Zealand) and here (New Zealand). It’s getting to be quite a collection.
Yes, the boats are indeed striking, but then again there is this guy doing his own personal contribution to the rather impressing amount of shoreline litter (top picture, lower left corner 😉
Thanks for the tip. I edited out the offending part of the photo – I'd thought that he was mending nets until you made me look again.
I wonder if the fish they catch in these water is good for your health.
I wondered about that…
Looks like an unhealthy situation all around. The boats are great, but are those poor people really living under tarps on the beach? What a sad state the world is in today! The contrast between the high-rises in the background and the poverty on the shore is striking. Sad and also beautiful.
Matt has a good eye for beauty and an obvious compassion for his fellows. I save a lot of his photos to my hard drive, hope he doesn't mind.
