As promised, some more photos from the working beach at Hastings (see my earlier set of photos). I haven’t much to say about them, except that I’m awestruck that these old wooden boats are still working in such numbers – at one time I would have said they were reducing in numbers so quickly they I thought they wouldn’t last more than a few seasons. But a few seasons later, here they are still…
These boats have hardly changed since the days of sail, and notice that there are plastic beach boats built along the old fashioned lines. Whether sailing or motoring, it seems there’s still nothing better for fishing off this coast.
Hi Gavin,
Thank you for documenting these wonderful boats, we need to do the same for Deal, where there are still a few.
I was in Malaysia recently, and took a number of photos of their wonderful painted boats, at the kampong of a friend Moh'd Hatta Salleh, who took me on the river in a small boat (would have been paddled a hundred years ago, now a type of outboard).
See Hatta's Google Earth photos on Panoramio of these painted boats :

A woodenboat will always catch your attention, even when it has been neglected. When I look at boats like these I go to another place. I must get down and see these boats, thanks to the photo's
All the best
Its good to know there are other people who appreciate traditional wooden boats
I see boats like this in all the places I do surveys. They will keep going as long as people repair them.
