Will Stirling of Cutters & Luggers has kindly sent us a fantastic set of pictures of his current project Alert, which he recently launched without the aid of a crane.
‘I made sheer legs, well stayed fore and aft with a wheel bolted on each. The boat unmasted and without ballast weighs about ten tons.
‘I jacked her down off her keel blocks on to short lengths of scaffolding pole, and then dragged her to the slip, which included two 90-degree turns, for which I made greasy turntables under the boat as there were the constraints of a narrow gap in the wall, the overhead railway and differing gradients.
‘The boat is now alongside in the Great Dock at Morwellham Quay and I will put up the masts using the main gaff of the Westcountry ketch Garlandstone.
The BBC filmed the launch and are coming to film the masting.’
Will plans on the 15th May to sail Alert with a crew of three to Spitsbergen, and then on to 80 degrees North – or about 600 miles short of the North Pole. I trust they have a good trip – I think Will has earned it!
Alert is for sale at £127,300, and Will is currently seeking a commission for a 36-40ft carvel cutter. He’s at telephone +44 1822 890 427 and email email@example.com.
