Here’s another YouTube presentation of some footage made public by the British Film Institute. The film shows a number of coxed fours and a single or two, one of which capsizes, and what I take to be a working boat. But what’s the source of power here – is it a steamer, or is she just drifting with the tide? There’s steam or smoke or both coming out of a small chimney, but I’m unable to decide what’s happening here. Answers via the comment link below please!

An elegant electric canoe from 100 years ago

Gena is a fine electric canoe built more than 100 years ago, and restored in the late 1980s by her owner Robin Newlands. All the fittings, equipment and motor are original, except the controller, which was modernised in 1923.

Take a look at the picture links – I took them at the Beale Park Boatshow in 2005, and it’s a privelege to have some good sized images to show you all. Thanks for taking her to the show Mr Newlands, wherever you are – you must be very proud.

Classics at Lough Erne

Ireland’s three great inland yacht clubs on Loughs Derg, Erne and Ree, came together for the first Waterways Ireland Classic Boat Regatta at Lough Erne Yacht Club on the weekend of September 15th and 16th.

The fleet was clearly splendid, and so was the weather, and from what we can see the photographers had almost as much fun as the people in the boats. Go to the page, scroll down and gaze at the photos, and sigh.
