John Welsford
A really good designer understands the principles of design so well that they’re able to design a wide range of boat types that work exactly as intended, or better, and to look good at the same time. John Welsford is one of these: although he’s probably best known for cruising dinghies in the 12 to 20ft range, he’s made a success of anenormous range of designs that also includes a successful Mini-Transat racer down to a number of tenders, outboard boats, small skiffs and fast rowers.
He’s always got more designs coming up, so his site is definitely one to watch. Traditional boat enthusiasts who for one reason or other may find real traditional boats don’t fit neatly into their lives might well be interested in some of his work.
Duckworks is a great e-zine full of encouraging stories, practical ideas, links, sources of information and the rest, and what’s more it’s free – supported by a mail-order business selling boatbuilding plans and an excellent range of low-cost but effective chandlery and materials hand-picked by Chuck and Sandra Leinweber. I strongly recommend it!
If you don’t already know it, Moray McPhail’s Classic Marine website is an excellent resource. There’s an extensive catalogue for all the nice bronze and gunmetal bits and pieces that traditional boats require, including a wide range of fittings for rigging, as well as navigation lights, portholes and lamps, rowlocks and the rest, and there are also boat plans from Iain Oughtred.

Caveat emptor! While many of these may describe some very good boats, the designer’s help will often not be available in building many of these. It may be wise therefore to find other people who have built to the same or similar plans.

Going to build the Julie this weekend. Plans look great. Should be fun.

Bill -
I’m delighted, really pleased, to hear this news.
As this will be the first complete full-sized Julie skiff, please stay in close contact and let me know of any problems that arise, or if there’s anything I can help with.
I would be hugely grateful for a report on the build (even if there isn’t much to say), please, some photos and a report too on how she performs. I’m sorry to trouble you for so much, but just a little material from the first builder can make a huge difference to the future takeup of the design.
Have you built the model?

Great Blog,
I’m a beginner sailor and I’m seriously considering building a very small sailing/rowing boat (car toppable/bicycle towable) for some sailing on the Thames and other locations. Any suggestions? Hannu’s Portuguese style dinghy or similar seems interesting. Perhaps slightly adapted with some storage/buoyancy?
Many thanks, keep up the good work!
