Cobles of Northumberland on the ITV Player

Robson Green on cobles

In this nice half-hour programme, actor and singer Robson Green goes fishing in a traditional Northumberland motor coble and meets a boat builder who still makes and maintains them.

I was struck by the contrast in pronunciation with Yorkshire – in Northumberland it’s pronounced ‘co-bull’ while along the coast further south it becomes ‘cob-ull’ – and by the coast’s wonderful scenery. I must go back.

In another segment meets the well known Northumbrian piper Katherine Tickell and concertinist and piper Alistair Anderson, so there’s some music too.

My thanks to the several readers who pointed this one out!
