PS – Reader Andrew White has alerted me to a sad accident associated with the regatta in which the Arch Logan designed Gypsy collided with another boat and sank quickly, injuring one of the two crew on board.

If you look for more posts by him you’ll find all sorts of interesting stories on the restoration of significant NZ vessels, the sort of thing you like to post about in the UK. The collision Andrew White refers to was at The Auckland Anniversary Regatta held the same day on Auckland harbour, about 60km south of Mahurangi. Gypsy has since been lifted from the seabed, hopefully to be rebuilt.
Sorry, same weekend, not same day. The Mahurangi race day is Saturday, allowing the same yachts to compete in Auckland on Monday – regional public holiday.
